An air conditioning apparatus for use in a small to medium size boat having a cabin, comprises an inlet disposed in fluid communication with the body of water to permit ingress of water from the body of water into the air conditioning apparatus. A heat transfer element is disposed in fluid communication with the inlet to receive water therefrom, and is disposed in heat transfer relation with the water in the heat transfer element and with air in the cabin, to permit substantially direct heat transfer from the air in the cabin to the water in the heat transfer element, thereby cooling the air in the cabin and heating the water in the heat transfer element. An outlet is disposed in fluid communication with the heat transfer element to receive water therefrom and with the body of water to permit egress of the warmed water from the air conditioning apparatus to the body of water. A pump is used to pump water from the inlet, through the heat transfer element, and out the outlet. Alternatively, the inlet and outlet are replaced by a closed loop heat-transfer-fluid circuit containing heat transfer fluid. A heat dissipation device disposed is disposed in fluid communication with the closed loop heat-transfer-fluid circuit, and disposed in heat transfer relation with the heat transfer fluid and with the body of water, to permit substantially direct heat transfer from the heat transfer fluid in the heat transfer element to the body of water.
