A separator for separating material from an air flow, has a plenum chamber to which the air and material are fed. A rapid decrease of air velocity occurs in the plenum chamber and much of the material separates out due to gravity. The air impinges on a deflector and further separation occurs. A diffuser can be used to prevent localized high velocity air streams occurring. At low rates of material content excess air flow can cause carrying over problems. An air throttle can be provided to restrict air flow velocity increases in high air flow conditions.
