ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A lubricant cooling apparatus for a vertical dynamoelectric machine cools a liquid lubricant which is retained in an annular reservoir surrounding the large thrust bearings. The cooling apparatus includes a primary air flow passageway passing over side and top walls of the reservoir and a plurality of secondary airflow passagewayF passing once through the reservoir which are in airflow communication with the primary passageway. Each secondary passageway includes a vertically disposed elongated hollow member having its ends in sealed relation to the top and bottom walls of the reservoir. An airflow mechanism draws air into the machine and through the passageways which are in heat exchanging relation with the lubricant whereby heat is removed from the lubricant. Prior art devices do not provide such ?n arrangement for air cooling the liquid lubricant.
