ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An air damper for an open fireplace is disclosed. The air damper is used with a heat exchanger which has an electric motor driving a fan to blow air across the top there- of. In the past the problem has been that heat exchangers of this type become exceedingly hot if the fan does not operate due to a power failure or the like. However, the present invention overcomes this problem. The air damper is positioned on the hot air side of a heat exchanger and the device comprises a rotatable metal screen or the like which constitutes a damper capable of assuming a first and a second position. The damper in the second position prevents the air stream from passing into the distribution passages of the heat exchanger and permits the air stream to pass out into the room where the fireplace is located or into a space safe for high temperatures. In the second position, the damper permits the air stream to pass into the distribution passages of the heat exchanger and prevents the air stream from passing into the room. The damper is capable by action of a force to assume the second position when there is a risk of excess temperature in the distribution passages which arises when the function of the fan is disturbed so that the air temperature in the device exceeds a predetermined value.
