ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The disclosure relates to a process for making light- weight construction material and to lightweight aggregate for use in the process. The process involves providing lightweight aggregate intermediates comprising expanded plastic cores having adherent thereto an adhesive mixture comprising 60% to 99% soil by weight, 0% to 20% Portland cement by weight, 0% to 6% sand by weight, 0% to 10% calcium hydroxide by weight, 0% to 4% sodium silicate by weight, and a quantity of water effective to make a paste, the soil imparting viscosity to the mixture. The aggreate intermediates are mixed with cement mortar or the like and the resulting mixture is allowed to cure. The aggre- gate intermediates may have an outer layer of cured cement mortar or burnable soil.
