A filtering device to be used in conjunction with an air tight face mask shell (4) to separate and trap air borne solid particles and water soluble gaseous contaminants from inhaled air. The filtering process is accomplished by the passage of inhaled and exhaled air through a series of ducts (5) formed by a matrix of plates (2) contained within the cell body (1). The entire cell is fabricated of thermally conductive non-corrosive metal. The exhaust flow of warm, moist exhaled air through the ducts (5) deposits a film of condensed water on the internal surfaces of the ducts. The changes in direction, pressure, density and velocity which are imposed on the flow of incoming air by the convoluted shape of the cell ducts causes air borne solid particles and water soluble gaseous contaminants to be forced into contact with the moisture laden internal surfaces by the action of centrifugal force, laminar flow and turbulence. The contaminants are trapped and held by the film of moisture in much the same manner as they would be held in the respiratory tract. The outward and downward flow of exhaled air combined with gravitational force serves to prevent the condensed water and contaminants from reaching the upper end of the cell and entering the mask.
