A preferred embodiment mattress (1010) for a bed is provided to support a patient. The mattress (1010) includes a plurality of air fluidized bladders (1022). Each bladder (1022) includes a fluidized zone (1028) having fluidizable material positioned therein. Each bladder (1028) further includes at least one diffuser (1036, 1038) configured to provide air to the fluidized zone (1028) to fluidize the material.
