ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An air freshener gel composition has a low degree of syneresis and an effective perfume generation profile. The gel is produced utilizing a composition from 0.5-10% by weight sodium or potassium carboxymethyl cellulose, from 0.01-10% by weight perfume, from 0.05-10% by weight of a surfactant material selected from nonionic surfactants and gum surfactants, a source of a trivalent metal cation sufficient to produce a weight ration of carboxymethyl cellulose to effective weight of trivalent cation of from 1:0.01 to 1:0.1 and water. The primary gelling agent carboxymethyl cellulose is cross-linked with the trivalent metal cation.
