ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Removal of heavy duty truck rear axle half shafts is seldom an easy task since the axle shafts are generally seated within their housings quite stubbornly. It is common to use a sledge hammer to break loose the axle flange from the hub. This practice often results in inadvertent damage to hub studs; and injury to the mechanic is not an uncommon occurrence. The invention presented herein overcomes these difficulties by providing a height adjustable mounting apparatus for a conventional air hammer so that the hammer may be accurately aligned with the axle flange and removal of the axle shaft accomplished rapidly, safely and with no attendant damage to hub studs. The apparatus is comprised of a wheeled horizontal frame to which is welded a first, generally rectangular vertical frame. A second rectangular vertical frame is attached to the first vertical frame via a plurality of rollered brackets and the second frame is free to move in the vertical plane with respect to the first vertical frame. A cylindrical hub shroud with an air hammer centrally mounted at one end is affixed to the second vertical frame and a means for raising and lowering the second vertical frame and thus the shroud, is provided. A pair of rotatable bars, mounted to the wheeled horizontal frame are used to lock the shroud to the truck hub during axle shaft removal.
