ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An air knife coater mechanism such as for coating a traveling web of paper including a backup over which the web travels with means for applying a coating to the web surface and an air knife for smoothing the coating while the web is supported on the backup roll with the air knife having first and second lips with the upper lip pivotally mounted for movement away from the lower lip to an open position for access to the gap and cleaning the distal edge of the upper lip and the operating mechanism in the form of an adjustable toggle linkage. -i-
