Abstract of the Disclosure A process for producing lithium nitride from at least 99.9% pure lithium metal. me lithium is heated in a tungsten vessel, either to 140 to 180° C at a nitrogen pressure of at least 250 mmHg and at commencement of the reaction the temperature is increased to between 400 and 600° C up to the melting point of Li3N, or is reacted at a nitrogen pressure below atmosphere pressure, yet above 250 mmHg at a temperature of above 300° C.
