92B106/MW ABSTRACT AIR SEPARATION Air is compressed in a compressor 4. A minor stream of the compressed air is cooled first in heat exchanger 12 by a pressurised stream of moisturised nitrogen and then in heat exchanger 14 by a stream of pressurised water, the stream of pressurised water thereby being heated. The cooled air is separated into oxygen and nitrogen in an air separation plant 16. The oxygen product is passed to a blast furnace 22 in which iron ore is reduced to iron and a low grade fuel gas is produced. The fuel gas flows to a combustion chamber 6 in which it is burnt using the rest of the compressed air to support its combustion. The resulting combustion gases are expanded in a turbine 8 which is used in the generation of electrical power. The nitrogen product of air separation is moisturised in gas-liquid contact column 28 with the heated stream of pressurised water. The resulting moisturised stream of nitrogen is that used in the heat exchanger 12. It passes out of the heat exchanger 12 and is expanded in expansion turbine 32 which is used in the generation of electrical power.
