An air treatment apparatus incorporates a UV tube 4 for sterilising an airstream that is drawn through the housing 1 by a fan 5, and also includes an ionizer element 6 for ionizing air in the airstream. The airstream passes from a housing inlet 131 to a housing outlet 141 along a duct 2 which includes deflector walls 214 that produce a narrowing 216 in which the UV tube 4 is located. This constrains the air to pass close to the UV tube 4 so as to receive a more intense treatment by the UV radiation.
