This invention relates to novel airbag coating compositions and systems comprising pre-expanded or non-expandable microspheres that provide effective insulation for the target airbag fabric during exothermic inflation. The inventive airbag fabrics are either pre-calendered prior to application of this composition or are coated through a gap (floating) knife method with such heat-expandable microsphere-containing compositions. The coated airbag fabrics and cushions may then be heated to evaporate the solvent within the coating composition. The resultant fabric thus exhibits the presence of the microsphere constituents of the coating compositions both within the interstices between the individual yarns of the fabric and over the raised yarns of the fabric. Such a coating system thus provides an extremely high degree of protection from heat exposure that permits structural integrity of the target airbag cushion airbag and provides protection from such high inflation temperatures to a vehicle passenger cushion during such a highly exothermic inflation event. The method of forming such specific airbag coating systems on airbag fabrics is also encompassed within this invention.

L'invention concerne des systèmes et des compositions de revêtement pour airbags comprenant des microsphères préalablement dilatées ou non dilatables conférant une isolation efficace à un tissu d'airbag cible lors d'un gonflement exothermique. Les tissus d'airbag de l'invention sont précalandrés avant l'application de cette composition ou revêtus au moyen d'un procédé faisant intervenir une râcle en l'air avec ces compositions contenant des microsphères à dilatation thermique. Les tissus et les coussins d'airbag revêtus peuvent alors être chauffés, d'où l'évaporation d'un solvant dans la composition de revêtement. Le tissu résultant est alors pourvu de constituants microsphériques de ces compositions de revêtement à la fois dans les interstices séparant les fils individuels du tissu et sur les fils dressés dudit tissu. Par conséquent, ce système de revêtement offre une excellente protection contre l'exposition thermique, d'où l'intégrité structurale du coussin d'airbag cible, et permet de protéger un coussin destiné au passager d'un véhicule contre les températures de gonflement élevées lors d'un gonflement hautement exothermique de ce type. L'invention concerne également un procédé de formation de systèmes spécifiques de revêtement d'airbag sur des tissus d'airbag.
