In aircraft, it is known generally to have an engine and propeller arrangement whereby the engine is mounted ahead of the passenger compartment and direct drives a two or more bladed propeller. In the invention described herein, the engine is relocated behind a firewall aft of the passenger compartment inside the aircraft tail cone. Attached to the engine is a transmission which directs engine power horizontally to two side-mounted, counter-rotating propfans .TM. (ducted fans). The propfans are mounted in such a way as to not transmit vibration or noise to the surrounding area or airframe. The engine is mounted centrally inside the fuselage, permitting the inclusion of an exhaust silencing system, turbo-charging and allowing the engine to be liquid cooled.
