A controller associated with the alarm system and the electrically operated lock simultaneously locks the door and arms the alarm or unlocks the door and disarms the alarm in response to key means. This reduces the incidence of false alarms and reduces the risk of leaving a building without activating the alarm system. The system typically uses a card as the key, the card being read by a card reader. The card reader may also be used to program the alarm system control unit.
