An alignment instrument for aligning dynamic spinal stabilization systems comprises a first alignment member, a second alignment member, and a linkage assembly. The first alignment member can be coupled at a distal end thereof to a spinal stabilization system at a first point. The second alignment member can be coupled at a distal end thereof to a spinal stabilization system at a second point. The linkage assembly has a first arm and a second arm. The linkage assembly can be rotatably coupled to the first alignment member and to the second alignment member. A first longitudinal axis extends through a body portion of the first alignment member and intersects a center of rotation located distally from the distal end thereof. A second longitudinal axis extends through a body portion of the second alignment member and intersects a center of rotation located distally from the distal end thereof.
