Disclosed are multi-purpose alkali-swellable and alkali soluble associative polymers, which are the polymerization product of a monomer mixture comprising: (a) at least one acidic vinyl monomer; (b) at least one nonionic vinyl monomer; (c) a first associative monomer having a first hydrophobic end group; (d) a monomer selected from the group consisting of a second associative monomer having a second hydrophobic end, a semihydrophobic monomer and a combination thereof; and, optionally, (e) one or more crosslinking monomers or chain transfer agents. When monomer (d) is an associative monomer, the first and second hydrophobic end groups of monomers (c) and (d) have significantly different hydrophobic and/or steric character from one another. The multi-purpose associative polymers surprisingly provide desirable rheological and aesthetic properties in aqueous media.
L'invention concerne des polymères associatifs gonflant aux alcalis et solubles dans ceux-ci, qui consistent en un produit de polymérisation d'un mélange de monomères comprenant: (a) au moins un monomère vinylique acide; (b) au moins un monomère vinylique non ionique; (c) un premier monomère associatif possédant un premier groupe terminal hydrophobe; (d) un monomère choisi dans le groupe constitué d'un second monomère associatif possédant un second groupe terminal hydrophobe, un monomère semi-hydrophobe et une combinaison de ceux-ci; et, éventuellement, (e) un ou plusieurs monomères de réticulation ou agents de migration de chaîne. Lorsque le monomère (d) est un monomère associatif, les premier et second groupes terminaux hydrophobes de monomères (c) et (d) présentent un caractère hydrophobe et/ou stérique sensiblement différent l'un de l'autre. Les polymères associatifs multifonctionnels offrent curieusement des propriétés rhéologiques et esthétiques optimales dans un milieu aqueux.
