ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Fine grain desulfurizing mixtures for iron based melts comprise alkaline earth carbons and a reducing metal. The metal combines with evolved CO2 exothermically, and the oxide formed in situ reacts with the melt to desulfurize it. Gas evolution is suppressed by the action of the metal. metal may be chosen to provide additional alkaline earth oxides for desulfurizing. The metal may also be chosen to increase the fluidity of the alag formed on the melt.
