ALKALINE EARTH FLUOROHALIDE STORAGE PHOSPHORS, PROCESSES FOR THEIR PREPARATION AND STORAGE PHOSPHOR SCREENS Abstract of the Disclosure Processes are disclosed which reduce and stabilize the optical density of alkaline earth fluorohalide phosphors. Optical density reducing procedures include contacting the phosphor while molten with bromine or chlorine gas, quenching the molten phosphor and annealing the phosphor in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. Phosphor particles are disclosed having per millimeter optical densities of less than 1.5 when measured as packed powders in a transparent refractive index matching liquid. Monocrystalline elements are disclosed that exhibit per millimeter optical densities of less than 0.2. Optical densities remain stable on storage. Storage phosphor screens constructed of either the particulate or monocrystalline phosphors are disclosed.
