ABSTRACT A process for the delignification of cellulose material in an aqueous alkaline-oxygen medium in a reaction vessel comprises dispersing oxygen into the alkaline medium prior to introduction of the medium into the reaction vessel and continu- ously flowing the alkaline-oxygen medium through the reaction vessel. The alkaline-oxygen medium continuously flows through the cellulose material in the reaction vessel where the cellulose material is maintained at a consistency of from about 5% to about 15% in the alkaline-oxygen medium and where the reaction vessel is maintained at about atmos- pheric pressure and a temperature of from about 60°C to 100°C. The continuous flow of medium through the reactor results in reaction byproducts from the delignification reaction flowing from the cellulose material as a waste stream which is continuously discharged from the reactor.
