An aqueous bath for electrodepositing zinc and zinc alloys wherein the alloying metals are selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt and nickel and containing an effective additive amount of a cationic polymer to produce enhanced deposits. The cationic polymer is represented by the formula: (see fig. I) wherein Y is selected from the group consisting of S and O; n is at least 1; R1, R2, R3 and R4 are the same or different and are each selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, 2-hydroxyethyl and - CH2CH2(OCCH2CH2)x OH, wherein X is 0 to 6; and R5 is selected from the group consisting of (CH2)2-O-(CH2)2; (CH2)2-O-(CH2)2-O-(CH2)2 and CH2-CHOH-CH2-O-CH2-CHOH-CH2. A process for electrodepositing zinc and zinc alloys using the baths of the invention is also disclosed.

Le polymère cationique est représenté par une formule (voir fig. I), où Y est choisi parmi S et O, n est au moins égal à 1, R1, R2, R3 et R4 sont les mêmes ou différents, chacun étant choisi parmi un groupe méthyle, éthyle, isopropyle, 2-hydroxyéthyle et -CH2CH2(OCCH2CH2)x OH, X ayant une valeur de 0 à 6, R5 est choisi parmi (CH2)2-O-(CH2)2, (CH2)2-O-(CH2)2-O-(CH2)2 et CH2-CHOH-CH2-O-CH2-CHOH-CH2. L'invention présente également une méthode pour le dépôt électrolytique de zinc et d'alliages de zinc grâce aux bains de l'invention.
