-15- ALKANOLAMINE GAS TREATING PROCESS FOR A FEEDSTREAM CONTAINING HYDROGEN SULFIDE ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION An alkanolamine acid gas process for removing acid gas from a feedstream containing hydrogen sulfide. The feedstream is contacted with an aqueous alkanolamine solution in an absorption column to form an alkanolamine solution rich in hydrogen sulfide. An alkanolamine solution lean in the acid gas is regenerated with the rich solution of alkanolamine for recycling through the absorption column. A vanadium compound is used in the alkanolamine solution for inhibiting corrosion. The improvement in the process comprises a) maintaining a minimum level between 0.003 to 0.02% hydrogen sulfide in the alkanolamine solution; and b) introducing oxygen into the alkanolamine solution to maintain about 30 to 70 ppm of vanadium in its plus five valance state throughout the acid gas treating operation.
