Novel alkenylphosphonic and phosphinic acid esters of 1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)alkanes and of 2,2-bis-hydroxymethyl- 1,3-propanediol of the formula I Image (I) wherein n is 1 or 2, R1 is, for example, C1-C4 alkyl, R2 is a group of the general formula III (III) Image wherein m is 0 or 1, R5 is C1-C4 alkyl, R6 is, hydrogen or C1-C4 alkyl and wherein R3 is hydrogen or a group of formula III and R4 is, for example, hydrogen. The new compounds are non-volatile, low-odour substances having a very good solubility and useful as cross-linking agents in the synthesis of polymers, in particular water-swellable hydrogels, from unsaturated monomers. Processes for the preparation of the compounds and hydrogels produced using them are also disclosed.
