ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Aqueous dispersions of coal powder having e.g. at least 30% by weight coal, preferably 30 - 85% by weight having good flowability properties are provided by employing, as the dispersing agent, at least 0.01%, but preferably 0.01 to 5.0% by weight of an anionic surface active agent having the formula: [R-O-?-CH2CH2O-?mSO3]nM wherein R is an alkyl or alkenyl group having 6 to 22 carbon atoms or an alkyl- or alkenyl-substituted aryl group having 4 to 22 carbon atoms in the substituent thereof. M is a cation having a valency of from 1 to 3. m is an integer of from 2 to 50, n is a number of from 1 to 3 and is the same as the valency of the cation. The aqueous coal dispersion so pro- vided may be used and transported in a practical way.
