2111101 9300317 PCTABS00019 A process of alkylating benzene or substituted benzene with an alkylating agent having from two to eighteen carbon atoms in the presence of a catalyst comprising an acidic mordenite zeolite having a silica/alumina molar ratio of higher that 160:1 and a crystalline structure which is determined by X-ray diffraction to have a Symmetry Index of at least 1, under temperature and pressure conditions sufficient to keep the reaction mixture in the liquid phase, and the molar ratio of benzene or substituted benzene to alkylating agent is less than 3:1 and greater than 1:1.
