Normandin ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE All optical modulators are disclosed which include a channel waveguide made of an optically nonlinear material and transmitting an infrared beam. A control light whose wavelength is shorter than the bandgap energy of the channel of the guide is directed to the guide to bring it to cutoff. Near 100% modulation was obtained for a silicon waveguide with less than 150 pJ with a subnanosecond initiation and recovery time in a three port, fiber optics, geometry suit- able for use as a logic gate. The operation is largely wavelength independent and stable.
