Normandin ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE All optical self limiters in a geometry suitable for use in a fiber optics context are disclosed. Edge coupled light to a silicon thin layer on a doped silicon substrate lowers the refractive index of the layer and eventually brings it to the waveguide cut off condition. In a further embodiment, by varying the amount of light incident on the nonlinear substrate and the nonlinear channel, a fully adjustable limiting action is obtained.
