The present invention consists of a system and method for regenerating and converting optical signals. The invention provides both ~2R (i.e. reamplification and reshaping) and ~3R~ (i.e. reamplification, reshaping, and resynchronization (or retiming)) regeneration. The components of the inventive system include a tunable continuous wave (CW) laser source, an optical circulator, an semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), and a spectral filter that has a very sharp cutoff frequency. In alternative embodiments, the filter may be replaced with an interleaver that passes several wavelengths. A single interleaver may be used by several of the optical regenerators/converters described herein. Each regenerator uses a separate wavelength that is associated with a passband frequency of the single interleaver. During counter- propagation in the SOA, a CW signal from the CW laser is chirped by bits in an input signal. The chirped signal is then output to the filter, which blocks the original CW signal.

L'invention concerne un système et un procédé de régénération et de conversion de signaux optiques. L'invention prévoit une régénération à la fois <= 2R >= (c'est-à-dire réamplification et conformation) et <= 3R >= ( c'est-à-dire réamplification, conformation et resynchronisation (ou réajustement du rythme)). Les constituants du système de l'invention comprennent une source laser à onde continue accordable (CW), un circulateur optique, un amplificateur optique à semi-conducteur (SOA) et un filtre spectral ayant une fréquence de coupure très nette. Dans d'autres modes de réalisation, le filtre peut être remplacé par un entrelaceur lequel permet le passage de plusieurs longueurs d'ondes. Un seul entrelaceur peut être utilisé par plusieurs des régénérateurs/convertisseurs optiques ici décrits. Chaque régénérateur utilise une longueur d'onde séparée laquelle est associée à une fréquence de bande passante de l'entrelaceur individuel. Pendant la contre-propagation dans le SOA, un signal CW provenant du laser CW est modulé par des bits dans un signal d'entrée. Le signal modulé est ensuite remis en sortie au filtre, lequel bloque le signal CW d'origine.
