The invention provides methods and materials related to vaccines against self IgE polypeptides. Compositions are described comprising a chimeric self IgE polypeptide and an adjuvant, which is either an aluminium compound or MN51, i.e. Montanide Incomplete Adjuvant (ISA) 51, which is mannide oleate in mineral oil solution. Administration of said composition should elicit an anti- self response and thereby reduce the level of detectable free IgE.
