ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An alloy wire consisting essentially of a single phase solid solution of tungsten and about 0.2 to about 6 percent by weight tantalum includes grain controlling additives. The alloy wire may be used in lamps as a filament or as a gettering component and the additives consist essentially of from about 30 to about 200 parts per million potassium and less than about 100 parts per million silicon.
