ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a process for preparing .alpha.-aminoacyl cephalosporins represented by the formula Image wherein R is phenyl, substituted phenyl, thienyl or furyl, R1 is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or 3-methyl-2-butanyl; and R2 is hydrogen or an ester forming group. When R1 is other than hydrogen and R2 ic hydrogen the 3-cephem ethers provided by the process of this invention are valuable orally effective antibiotics, especially 7-(D-.alpha.-phenylglycylamido)-3-methoxy- 3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid. The 3-hydroxy cephalosporins (R1 = H, R2 = ester) are valuable intexmediates.
