Disclosed is an alpha gauging device for ambient suspended particulates, comprising, a tray housing reference and sample substrates, a source of alpha particles which may be mono or multienergetic, an absorber for adjusting the energy of the alpha particle beam, and an alpha particle detector. The source, tray, absorber and detector are oriented such that said alpha particle beam is incident on said sample or reference substrates and said transmitted beam is incident on said alpha particle detector.
