This invention relates to compounds and salts of Formula I (see formula I) which are useful as .alpha.-ketoamide inhibitors of multicatalytic protease (MCP), to compositions comprising such inhibitors and to methods of using the MCP inhibitors. The MCP inhibitors of the present invention are useful, for example, to retard loss of muscle mass incident to various physiological states.
