ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE .alpha.- Substituted N-(trimethylcycloalkenyl)-N-alxylacetdmides are disclosed of the formula Image wherein R represents a linear or branched alkyl or alkoxynlkyl radical having 1-6 carbon atoms or an allyl radical optionally substituted with Cl-C4 alkylene groups, and X is a substituent from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, chlorine, and bromine in any combination, the free valences represent hydrogen and wherein the methyl groups for the l-cyclopentene derivatives are in the 3,3,5-, 3,5,5- or 2,4,4- positions and for the l-cyclohexane derivatives are in the 3,3,5- or 3,5,5- positions. These compounds have herbicidal activity. Methods of preparation are also disclosed.
