ABSTRACT Alpha-sulfoxide and alpha-sulfone carboxyl compounds useful as detergent surfactants are disclosed. The compounds are particularly effective in removing greasy/oily soils under cold water laundering conditions. Detergent compositions containing the compounds also preferably contain cosurfactants and builder materials.
