ABSTRACT .alpha.-Vinyl-.beta.-amino acrolein compounds of the formula III, and processes for their preparation, are described: Image (III) in which R6 and R7 independently represent a straight chain or branched alkyl group containing up to 10 carbon atoms which may be substituted with an OH group, or together are -CpH2p- or -(CH2)2-O (CH2)2, in which p is an integer of from 2 to 22. These compounds find use in the preparation of 2-substituted- 5-vinyl pyrimidines of the formula (I), which, in their turn are suitable for the preparation of various polymers: Image (I).
