ABSTRACT An alphanumeric keyboard having the capability to identify the language supported by the keyboard and the mode of keyboard operation. A switch component having a plurality of individually settable switch elements is connected to the keyboard control logic such that the position of the switch elements may be used to identify characteristics of the keyboard. The keyboard control logic in response to a request from the terminal associated with the keyboard, supplies the information from the switch to the terminal.
