A method of altering the physical and/or chemical properties of hair or wool fibres. The method includes the steps of expressing one or more exogenous proteins in follicle cells of the hair or wool fibre, and/or over-expressing or under-expressing one or more endogenous proteins in follicle cells of the hair or wool fibre. The protein is expressed in at least one compartment of the hair follicle so that is interacts physically and/or chemically with native KAP and/or IF structural proteins and the interactions are relatively uniform in distribution throughout the compartment to thereby alter the properties of the hair or wool fibre without substantially affecting the structural integrity of the fibre. In one specific embodiment, silk proteins are expressed in the cortex of hair or wool fibres to thereby alter the properties of the hair or wool fibre.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de modifier les propriétés physiques et/ou chimiques de fibres de poil ou de laine. Ce procédé consiste à exprimer une ou plusieurs protéines exogènes dans des cellules folliculaires de fibres de poil ou de laine, et/ou à sur-exprimer ou sous-exprimer une ou plusieurs protéines endogènes dans des cellules folliculaires de fibres de poil ou de laine. La protéine est exprimée dans au moins un compartiment du follicule du poil de façon à interagir physiquement et/ou chimiquement avec les protéines natives structurelles associées à la kératine (KAP) et/ou de filament intermédiaire (IF) et les interactions sont relativement uniformes en distribution à travers le compartiment, afin de modifier les propriétés des fibres de poil ou de laine sans affecter sensiblement l'intégrité structurelle des fibres. Dans un mode de réalisation spécifique, des protéines de soie sont exprimées dans le cortex des fibres de poil ou de laine afin de modifier les propriétés des fibres de poil ou de laine.
