Traffic in a multiple ring transmission system is advantageously routed via alternate rings should a ring fail. Upon the failure of a ring, a hunt is first undertaken to establish the available restoration capacities within the rings. Next, a selected set of available restoration capacities is reserved (selected) to optimize the transmission of traffic between a destination node and an origin node. The selected set of restoration capacities are then cross-connected to route traffic between the origin and destination nodes.
