ALTERNATE ROUTING Abstract of the Disclosure In a communications system comprising a network of switching nodes and interconnecting transmission links, with messages being transported between entry nodes and egress nodes in the form of "source routed" signals comprising a message portion and a header portion which predetermines the route the signal will take through the network, the route for insertion in the header is obtained from a routing database. The routing database associated with a particular entry node contains at least two different routes, "primary" and "secondary", for each egress node accessible from that entry node. In the event that the primary route fails, connection control means at the entry node will select the secondary route for subsequent connection attempts. The connection control means may select the secondary route should one or more signals fail to reach the egress node and be acknowledged within the allotted time. - i -
