ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a cup separating device for use in a beverage dispensing vending machine. The device comprises a fixed body with an opening through which cups may pass. Two cup-supporting arms are pivotally mounted about vertical axes on the body and lie on opposite sides of the opening. Two pairs of cup-splitting arms are also pivoted on vertical axes above the cup supporting arms and lie on opposite sides of the opening. An actuating member is mounted on the body for sliding movement between first and second positions. It carries camming means for swinging the supporting arms and the splitting arms about their vertical pivot axes as the actuating member is moved. In the first position the cup supporting arms support the cups below the rim of the bottom cup and the cup-splitting arms are clear of the stack of cups. As the actuating member is moved towards the second position the pairs of cup-splitting arms are moved to engage below the rim of the cup next above the bottom cup and then the supporting arms are moved outwardly away from the stack of cups. Finally a projection engages between the arms of each pair of splitting arms to force them apart in the vertical direction and thus prise the lowermost cup from the stack.
