Abstract In an alternating voltage-red rectifier circuit (1) followed by a smoothing condenser (C1), at least one rectifier (T1, T2, T3) is controllable. A control circuit (3) is provided which, during the charging period of the smoothing condenser (C1), brings the rectifier into the conductive state over such a period shortened relatively to a half wave that the direct output voltage of the rectifier circuit (1) exceeds the momentary condenser voltage (Uc) by no more than a pre- determined limited value. In this way, over-oscillation of the voltage through the combination of the mains impedance and the smoothing condenser (C1) is avoided. Fig. 1
