Alternator systems are known in which two pairs of diodes are connected between respective outputs of an alternator and respective outputs of the system, the diodes being connected in opposite senses. In the present invention, a switch is connected in shunt across each of the diodes connected to the zero volts output of the system. The switches are controlled by a control unit, which receives a sample of the signal appearing at the other output. The output voltage of the system is reduced by closing the switches in phase with the output voltage while current is being supplied to the positive output of the system. The output voltage is increased by closing the switches while current is not being supplied to the positive output and opening the switches after current starts to be supplied to the positive output so that energy stored in the alternator is transferred to the system output.
