ABSTRACT The present invention provides an alumina adapted for use as a semiconductor memory package having a low alpha-ray radioactivity and a process for preparing the same, the alumina being prepared by a process comprising the steps of preparing a sodium aluminate solution through extraction of alumina from a bauxite ore removing organic compounds contained in the sodium aluminate solution substantially entirely, adding alumina hydrate seed crystals to the sodium aluminate solution substantially free of organic compounds to precipitate alumina hydrate, separating the precipitated alumina hydrate from the solution, and then calcining the alumina hydrate.
