A ceramic body (20), as well as a hot-pressing method or a sintering to full density method of making the ceramic body (20). The hot-pressed ceramic body (20) contains between about 15 and about 35 volume percent of a boron carbide phase, and at least about 50 volume percent of alumina. The sintered to full density ceramic body (20) contains between about 15 and about 50 volume percent of a boron carbide phase and at least about 50 volume percent alumina. The substrate (21) further includes at least one of the following components (a) through (b) wherein the sum of the amounts of components (a) and (b) is equal to an effective amount to achieve full densification wherein components (a) and (b) include (a) a metal component including one or more of aluminum, magnesium and zinc; and (b) a reduction component containing carbon.

La présente invention se rapporte à un corps céramique (20), ainsi qu'à un procédé de pressage à chaud ou de frittage à pleine densité permettant de fabriquer ledit corps céramique (20). Le corps céramique pressé à chaud (20) contient de 15 à 35 % volume environ d'une phase de carbure de bore, et au moins 50 % volume environ d'alumine. Le corps céramique fritté à pleine densité (20) contient de 15 à 50 % volume environ d'une phase de carbure de bore, et au moins 50 % volume environ d'alumine. Le substrat (21) renferme au moins l'un des composants suivants (a) et (b), ledit composant (a) étant un composant métallique contenant de l'aluminium et/ou du magnésium et/ou du zinc, et ledit composant (b) étant un composant de réduction contenant du carbone, la somme des quantités desdits composants (a) et (b) étant égale à une quantité efficace pour parvenir à une pleine densification.
