A battery is provided comprising an aluminum anode (10), an aqueous sulfur catholyte (22), and a second electrode (26) capable of reducing sulfur. A polysulfide cathode (for use with the above battery or independently) includes solid sulfur (24) at ambient temperatures, and the cathodic charge stored in that solid sulfur can be directly accessed. An anode (10) (for use with the above battery or independently) is also described, with the ability to utilize a substantial fraction of the anodic charge stored in the aluminum when immersed in electrolytes containing over 10 molar alkaline hydroxide (32).
