HOE 90/H 016 Aluminum bis(hydroxymethyl)phosphinate, and a process for the preparation of bis(hydroxymethyl)phosphinates Abstract of the disclosure: In a process for the preparation of bis(hydroxymethyl)- phosphinates of the formula Nn+[(HOCH2)2PO2-]n in which M is Li, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn or Al, and n is the valency of the element concerned and has a value of 1, 2 or 3, phosphinates of the formula Mn+[H2PO2-]n are reacted with formaldehyde, trioxane or paraformaldehyde in water in an autoclave at a temperature of from 100° to 200°C under the autogenous pressure at a residence time of from 5 to 20 hours. The novel chemical substance aluminum bis(hydroxymethyl)phosphinate of the formula Al[(HOCH2)2PO2-]3 is also obtainable in this way.
