ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An ambient sensing electrochemical device comprising an inert non-silicon substrate; a monolithic semiconductive device formed on a first portion of a first surface of the substrate and integral therewith; a sensor for sensing at least one property of the ambient formed on and integral with a second portion of the first surface of the substrate removed from the first portion; and a connector for connecting the sensing means to the semiconductive device. By using an inert substrate in place of a substrate such as silicon, ion migration through the substrate and resulting degradation in device performance is minimized. The device is useful for monitoring the composition of a chemical environment, for example, to regulate chemical or biochemical processors, to determine air or water quality, or to measure parameters of interest in biomedical, agricultural or animal husbandry disciplines.
