The present invention relates to guanidinated or amidinated polysaccharides having a structure selected from the group consisting of: (see formula I and II) wherein: Z1, Z2 and Z3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C1-C10 alkyl, substituted C1-C10 alkyl, C5-C7 cycloalkyl, and benzyl, and wherein the alkyl-substituents are selected from the group consisting of C1-C5 alkyl, and amino groups; and m is an integer of at least 1.
